It’s official. Colombia prohibits Apple sell its iPhones and iPads with 5G technology throughout its territory. This is because it infringes the patent to develop this technology that was granted to the Swedish company Ericsson in 2019.

What does the measure say?

The court order mentions that Apple may not sell, market, or advertise its products that have 5G technology. This includes iPhones and iPads. Same. However, you must inform your authorized distributors about this measure so that they also stop selling these products.

The measure also indicates that Apple did not comply with the Colombian patent NC2019/0003681 (which is valid until December 2037), which is essential for the development of 5G technology.

¿For what is this?

The Ericsson company, which is dedicated to telecommunications solutions, wants Apple to pay up to five dollars for each device sold. The company founded by Steve Jobs considers that it is a very high price, therefore it did not accept this request.

Ericsson has the FRAND patent (Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory), which is essential for this type of 5G device.

Under this context, Colombia has agreed with Ericsson and Apple will no longer be able to import its products with 5G.

According to the official Apple website, the iPad devices that have 5G are these:

  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation)
  • 11-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation)
