Apple files new patent for under-screen Face ID

A patent recently granted to Apple describes a solution that would make it possible to place several of the sensors present today on the front of the iPhone — including those on the iPhone. Face ID — under the device’s screen. Identified by Patently Appleshe also mentions devices such as iPads, Macs, Apple Watches and even a possible mixed reality glasses (virtual and augmented).

At first, the patent talks about an improved version of the current Dynamic Island (Dynamic Island), only with a much larger range of possible applications. According to the information, among the sensors that could be placed under the display are not only components such as Face ID / Touch ID sensors, but also proximity, gestures, pressure, orientation and several others.

These components would also have a series of optical sensors, such as the famous LiDAR — present today in the rear camera modules of the iPhone 14 Pro/14 Pro Max and iPad Pro. Time-of-flight, humidity and eye tracking sensors are other examples of components mentioned in the patent.

The patent also describes a kind of Dynamic Island which can change position on the screen using small transparent windows. More specifically, it would be possible to change the position and size of the Dynamic Island by selectively turning on or off pixels on the screen.

The images below show, first, the illustration of a display (figure 3) with its various layers, which partially cover up a sensor. It is also possible to notice a figure (number 5) of what would be the top view of the pixels on the screen of a device with the spaces for the sensors positioned under the display.

Recent rumors, it is worth remembering, show that Apple intends to launch an iPhone without any cutout on the screen by the end of 2024. Whether this patent will be the solution chosen by the company to make this a reality, only time will tell.
