Apple implements a new system to quickly fix security vulnerabilities

To apply a security update, the user had to install a new version of the OS, a rather time-consuming and laborious method. But that was before, before the arrival of the Rapid Security Response.

Rapid Security Response (or RSR), three words that may seem foreign to iPhone, iPad or Mac users. And yet, it is a new feature deployed by Apple that may well save the integrity and security of the user’s private data and files.

Instead of deploying an update that requires a long loading time and restarting the device, Rapid Security Response will directly apply the patch where the flaw is present, a bit like a bandage on a wound. . There is therefore no need for the user to go through a long and tedious installation process as he did before.

“By default, urgent security updates are automatically installed on your device. If necessary, a message may prompt you to restart your device”specifies Apple on its help page.

Urgent security updates (this is the French name of the function) have just been deployed in public version on all devices where iOS 16.4.1, iPadOS 16.4.1 or macOS 13.3.1 is installed. The Apple can thus quickly deploy improvements for Safari, for the WebKit framework or for other tools essential to the proper functioning of the system.

“They (the RSRs, Ed.) can also provide a faster response to certain security issues, including issues that could have been exploited or reported.”

Go straight to the point

Regularly, the Apple is warned of major security flaws in its operating systems. Going through an urgent security update allows Apple to no longer wait for the deployment of a more important version of the system. On this pageApple should soon list all updates from this RSR.

To uninstall this feature or learn more about it, go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad or System Settings on your Mac. On iOS and iPadOS, go to General, Software update, Automatic updates and check that the option Security updates and system files is properly activated.

On macOS, select the menu General in the sidebar then go to Software Updates. By going into Show the details, you will learn more about it. It is on these screens in particular that you will see if Apple has recently installed a security patch.
