Apple is working on new 12- and 15-inch MacBooks

New Apple computers are in the works. Nothing very surprising so far, except that future MacBooks equipped with the Apple SIlicon M2 chip would return to screen diagonals that we have not seen for a long time at Apple.

Apple is renewing its fleet of machines at full speed. Since its switch to the ARM architecture (with its M1 processor in 2020), the brand of the late Steve Jobs is working to switch his entire family of computers to this new software architecture, and is even working on new machines it seems.

A 15-inch MacBook Air for large format mobility

The always very well informed journalist of Bloomberg Mark Gurman has just spilled a few little trade secrets and spilled the beans on what Apple is planning for late 2022 and early 2023. According to him, a 15-inch MacBook Air is planned for back-to-school 2022. This machine — to the screen diagonal never before seen on the Air range — would in fact be an enlarged version of the MacBook Air M2 presented recently at WWDC. It would therefore be very logically equipped with Apple’s new in-house processor and would adopt the new, more rectangular design that Apple has been using since the Macbook Pro M1 Pro et M1 Max. Priority would still be given to the thinness of the computer, but in a larger format compared to the recently announced 13-inch model.

But that’s not all, a 12-inch MacBook could also make a comeback. Ultra compact, this machine should reconnect with the diagonal screen more seen at Apple since the tiny MacBook 2016. The computer then was devoid of a fan to gain a few precious square millimeters within the carcass. Apple could well try this adventure again, but with its new ARM chips much more suitable for computers without an active heat dissipation system, as proven by the 2020 MacBook Air. The price positioning of the machine is not yet known, but no doubt Apple will want to make this 12-inch model a not too expensive gateway into its ecosystem.

M2 Pro and M2 Max in the pipes

Finally, unsurprisingly, Bloomberg confirms that Apple is currently working on M2 Pro and M2 Max chips which would take over from the processors presented at the end of 2021. The new components signed by Apple should offer a small performance boost over what the impressive M1 Pro and M1 Max chips already offer. The M2 Max would be equipped with 12 cores for the CPU and 38 cores for the graphics part. The chips will obviously not arrive alone, but accompanied by MacBook Pro 14 and 16 inches between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023.

By the end of the year, Apple should therefore unveil many new references to its catalog. Apple’s Intel period seems well and truly over and it is now a tidal wave of machines with ARM processors that Apple will offer to its customers. At the same time, the company would also work on new iPad 11, 12.9 and even 14 inches. These should see the light of day before the beginning of 2023.
