Rolling out in this week’s beta release for iOS 27.3, Apple Music is adding a new karaoke feature called Selfie Sing that lets users record vertical video performances directly inside the app, trustedreviews.com reported.
The feature builds on Apple Music Sing, which isolates and lowers a track’s original vocals while displaying synchronized lyrics on screen. Users activating Selfie Sing encounter a new camera toggle situated right beneath the vocal audio volume control. Tapping this toggle initiates a video recording interface designed specifically for vertical orientation.
Code Sleuth Spots Feature Restricted to iPhones
Code sleuth Aaron Perris first spotted the feature and shared an early demonstration on X, revealing that the capability is presently restricted to iPhones. Testing on an iPad Pro running iPadOS 27.3 showed no option to access the camera feature, despite a dedicated Selfie Sing playlist appearing across other Apple devices. phonearena.com noted that the playlist contains 49 iconic pop tracks, spanning selections like Los Lobos’ “La Bamba,” Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time,” Spin Doctors’ “Two Princes,” and System of a Down’s “Toxicity.” While these tracks appear in the playlist on various devices and older software versions, the actual camera recording interface and vocal effects require the iOS 27.3 beta.

Aaron Perris’s early demonstration featured an Animoji masking the tester’s face, though that addition was simply used to hide identity rather than functioning as an integrated component of Selfie Sing itself. The feature does, however, support the iPhone Duo’s rear-camera selfie mode. This architectural layout shifts video capture to the phone’s outer display, letting users record with the main rear hardware while maintaining direct visual contact with the scrolling lyrics.
Apple Music Relies on Advanced Audio Stem Separation
Apple previously experimented with social-friendly video creation tools through its now-discontinued Clips app. Baking recording functionality directly into Apple Music streamlines the user journey, bypassing the need for secondary applications.

Under the hood, Apple Music relies on advanced audio stem separation rather than basic mid-side phasing tricks to isolate vocals from the master track. This capability has remained a staple of the platform since iOS 16.2. Yet, despite the ongoing expansion of audio and video features, certain ecosystem gaps persist. Apple Music still lacks native cross-device playback Handoff, preventing users from transferring active listening sessions from a personal computer to an iPhone in the manner common to competing services like Spotify.
The Path Forward for the iOS 27.3 Beta
As Selfie Sing remains confined to the iOS 27.3 beta testing cycle, no official date has been confirmed for a wider public rollout. Whether this vertical video integration becomes a popular addition or simply another karaoke novelty is not yet clear.
