Apple Updates Desktop Lineup With M6 iMac Starting at $1,499

Apple updated its all-in-one desktop lineup with the new M6 iMac, featuring internal upgrades that double both graphics and artificial intelligence processing speeds while retaining its signature 24-inch Retina display and colorful chassis design.

M6 Silicon Replaces the M4 Generation

The latest iMac iteration lands on the M6 chip architecture. Apple configured the base desktop model with a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, carrying a starting price tag of $1,499. A more robust configuration featuring a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU starts at $1,699.

Under heavy workloads, the M6 architecture delivers up to two times faster graphics performance compared to the M4 versions for tasks ranging from photo and video editing to gaming. A dual 16-core Neural Engine powers local machine learning tasks, doubling AI processing capability.

Unified Memory and Port Tiering

Unified memory starts at 16GB across the lineup and scales up to 32GB on select models. Selecting the maximum 32GB RAM ceiling requires stepping up to the 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU variant paired with a 512GB solid-state drive. Configurations utilizing 16GB or 24GB of RAM top out at 256GB of onboard storage.

External connectivity varies strictly by price tier. The entry-level model equips only two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports. Upgrading to the higher-end 12-core configuration expands the rear I/O array to four Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports.

Display Technology and External Redesign Limits

Externally, the chassis remains identical to its predecessor. The desktop retains a 24-inch Retina display with a native 4.5K resolution of 4,480 by 2,520 pixels. OLED panel technology is absent from this release, though display industry reports indicate organic light-emitting diode integration remains planned for a future hardware cycle.

The desktop continues to target aesthetic versatility alongside silicon performance. Apple offers the hardware in seven distinct color options: blue, purple, pink, orange, yellow, green, and silver.

Pre-Order and Release Timeline

Pre-orders for the M6 iMac open tomorrow, October 28, with retail availability scheduled to begin on November 6.
