The iPhone 15 Pro Max would pave the way to new photo heights for the iPhone 16 Pro Max later.

After years of dragging its feet against its competitors, Apple finally seems determined to get up to speed in photography by offering a more muscular telephoto lens. While the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected in September 2023 with a periscope, the iPhone 16 Pro Max would go a step further.
The information comes to us from the leaker Digital Chat Station, which officiates on Weibo and whose leaks have proven reliable in the past. He argues that the iPhone 16 Pro Max would incorporate a “super telephoto lens”.
What is a super telephoto lens?
At first glance, the term super might sound like a pretty sketchy marketing piece. But in photography, a super telephoto lens generally refers to a lens that exceeds 200 mm. This is the case for example of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, equipped with a 230 mm equivalent on its X10.
If we follow this logic, a super telephoto lens on an iPhone 16 Ultra should at least be an X8, starting from a main module equivalent to 25 mm, 25 mm multiplied by eight giving 200 mm.
On the current smartphone market, very few brands are able to offer such a level of zoom. The Honor Magic 5 Pro stops at a 90mm equivalent, the Vivo X80 Pro went up to 125mm and the Pixel 7 Pro 120mm.
If Apple took the step of 200 mm, there is no doubt that many competitors would then line up. Android smartphones would also lose a real argument of demarcation compared to the Apple brand.
The third way may be to be found on the side of algorithms capable of greatly improving the quality of digital zoom, such as what we saw on the Pixel 7 Pro. Despite its 120 mm equivalent (X5), it is capable of going up to a 750 mm equivalent (X30) while retaining a lot of detail. That being said, nothing currently replaces a good old optical zoom. Apple seems to agree.
