Generally, the average price of smartphones tends to drop at the beginning of the year, after the busy holiday season. The first trimester is usually a pivotal period outflow of stocks before the arrival of new generations of mobile devices.
In the case of Apple, the pattern is a little different due to the presentation of new models in September, but the start of the year usually sees the average price of iPhones drop significantly.
However, this phenomenon does not apply this year. According to data from CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners), not only has the average sale price of iPhones not fallen compared to the end of 2022…but it has even increased!
Almost $1000!
And with an average price of 988 dollars (a record, to be compared with 882 dollars a year before), it even has something to make the competition jealous. Several phenomena can explain it.
First there is the news Apple’s strategy which tends to favor the iPhone Pro over the standard models by reinforcing their differences for a higher price.
This has not deterred consumers and iPhone 14 Pro et iPhone 14 Pro Max have been well received by outselling the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus versions.
The premium strategy
This choice to highlight the Pro models will continue with the next iPhone 15 series which will follow the same path, the bulk of the novelties being transferred to the ever more expensive models.
Apple could even go further by introducing an even more premium iPhone Ultra either this year or with the 2024 iPhone 16 series (rumors don’t agree).
The other reason comes from second-hand and trade-in market. The iPhone (and even more the premium models) benefits from a lower discount than the Android brands and thus retains a good part of its value when the other smartphones suffer significant losses in value.
This creates a mechanism that encourages consumers to turn to premium models which become more accessible on the one hand thanks to the good residual value of an old model and which on the other hand can be resold at a price that remains high.
