Arsenal are driving a broad youth recruitment sweep, highlighted by a £1million upfront deal for Blackburn Rovers striker Igor Tyjon and a pursuit of Liverpool teenager Vincent Joseph. The north London club has also booked medicals for Manchester United prospects Habeeb Ogunneye and James Scanlon ahead of moves this summer.
Igor Tyjon and the Manchester United Academy Arrivals
Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Blackburn Rovers striker Igor Tyjon in a deal structured around a £1million upfront fee with a further £2m in add-ons. Tyjon is scheduled to undergo a medical on Friday, August 21, and a formal announcement is expected early next week. The 18-year-old forward rejected an offer to sign professional terms with Blackburn to pursue a move to the Emirates, after Arsenal previously made approaches for the England youth international during the previous summer and January transfer windows.
Tyjon will train with the first team while initially playing for the club’s Under-21s, with senior minutes anticipated from Mikel Arteta this season. Heading south, Igor Tyjon trades Blackburn for Arsenal. The versatile forward joined Blackburn from Rochdale in 2023 and made three senior appearances for the Rovers, with the first two of those coming during the 2024/25 season.
The north London club is also expected to complete deals for Manchester United duo Habeeb Ogunneye and James Scanlon. James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye are both due to join Arsenal this summer. Ogunneye has undergone a medical ahead of joining Arsenal’s U21s on a free transfer, with Manchester United retaining a 40 per cent sell-on clause for the 20-year-old right-back who will similarly train with the first team. Scanlon, a 19-year-old winger, is closing in on a move to north London and is expected to wrap up a deal by Monday after a weekend medical.
Targeting Emerging England Talent from Liverpool, Crystal Palace, and Cardiff
Arsenal have reached an agreement with England youth international striker Vincent Joseph to join the club from Liverpool. An agreement is in place between Arsenal and Joseph, and the two clubs are currently discussing a fee settlement for the 16-year-old striker, whose compensation will be decided by a tribunal if one cannot be found. Such a tribunal is necessary when a player under the age of 24 moves clubs before signing their first professional contract or at the expiry of their professional contract.
When deciding what the compensation should be, the Professional Football Compensation Committee takes multiple factors into account, including age, playing record, length of time Joseph was at Liverpool, the status of both clubs, and, among other considerations, the terms offered by both teams. Joseph has scored eight goals in nine appearances for England’s under-16 side and played for Liverpool in the under-18 Premier League, after not signing scholarship terms at Anfield following the expiration of his schoolboy registration contract.
The move for Joseph is indicative of Arsenal continuing their drive to recruit emerging talent, aiming to add promising players who they believe have the potential to break into the club’s first-team squad, or alternatively could generate future transfer interest and revenue. Mylo Bernard, 16, has also agreed to join the north London club from Crystal Palace. As with Joseph, Bernard’s schoolboy registration contract at Palace has now expired, leaving him open to moving on a training compensation deal. Arsenal are also set to complete the signing of Cardiff City’s youngest-ever player, Axel Donczew. Donczew, 16, became the youngest player to ever represent Cardiff’s first team when he was introduced as a second-half substitute against Newport County in the EFL Trophy on October 25, aged 15 years and 234 days.
Navigating Valuations and Missed Targets in the Youth Market
Arsenal’s recruitment drive reflects an ongoing focus on acquiring emerging talent.
Arsenal were previously interested in a move for teenage winger Jeremy Monga. However, the north London club felt that Leicester City’s £10million ($13.3m) valuation of the 17-year-old was too high and he subsequently joined Manchester City in July. Arsenal’s 16-year-old England youth international Mishel Nduka turned down a new deal at the club and, like Monga, also joined City. Arsenal did, however, complete the signing of former defender Matthew Upson’s son Elijah following the 18-year-old’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur. The teenager has linked up with the club’s academy.
