Aurora borealis over Poland 24/03/24. It may reappear that night

The northern lights were visible on the night from Saturday to Sunday over Poland. At Kontakt 24 we received photos showing this unique phenomenon. There is a chance that we will also see this light spectacle that night, but there is no certainty.

On the night from Saturday to Sunday, conditions over Poland were favorable for observing the northern lights, although in places the sky was covered with rain clouds. At Kontakt 24 we received photos of the phenomenon taken at Lake Lubowidzkie in Lębork and Ustka (Pomeranian Voivodeship).

Another chance coming soon

Due to unfavorable weather conditions, many people were unable to observe the aurora borealis. However, all is not lost. As Karol Wójcicki, author of the blog “With your head in the stars”, explained on social media, there is also a chance that aurora will appear on the night from Sunday to Monday. However, this is not certain.

“As expected, after a short period of Bz at the level of -25 nT, the trend is drastically reversed. This takes away hope for the aurora borealis in Poland, but we will see what will happen in 2-3 hours,” Wójcicki wrote on his Facebook profile.

Bz is a parameter that determines the magnetic orientation of the solar wind. To be able to see the aurora borealis in the northern hemisphere, this value should be negative.

On Sunday evening, the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences reported that the geomagnetic storm reached level G4 on a five-point scale. “The aurora borealis may occur throughout Poland,” experts wrote on social media.
