While Mr. Vasil Myroshnichenko, Ukrainian ambassador to Australia said it was an act of utmost disrespect for the Ukrainian people. Art4Ukraine Australia said it may not have been appropriate before Mr Seaton started drawing.
Critics said the work – titled Peace Before Pieces – drew a false moral equivalence between the two sides. “What would people think if a mural featured a rapist and a victim hugging?” co-chair of the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations, Stefan Romaniw, said in a statement. “Trying to be ‘even-handed’ and accepting a false narrative that ‘all we need is peace’ in this case supports evil.” /CTO ART/
Mr Seaton decided to paint over the painting. By working until 3.00 am on Monday local time. “This painting cost me $2,000-3,000 (about 73,500-110,000 baht). I wouldn’t have done that and spent 10 days on it if I thought it would hurt people,” Seaton said. ABC TV Station
Before reiterating that he still believes that the painting has a useful perspective. And many people understand what they want to communicate. “But obviously there was a group of people who felt that this picture would be dangerous and potentially traumatic and that was not something I wanted to create as a work of art.”
