Kapalua (dpa) – With a record result on the PGA tour, professional golf player Cameron Smith won the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

The 28-year-old Australian stayed 34 strokes below the course standard in his win. Smith needed the fewest strokes at an event on the PGA Tour. At the end he played a round of 65 and needed a total of 258 strokes less than the world number one Jon Rahm from Spain. Third was the Australian Matt Jones with a total of 260 strokes.

The record was previously held by the South African Ernie Els, who in 2003 also remained 31 strokes below the course standard in Hawaii. The last player to hit par 30 under par was American Dustin Johnson at the 2020 tournament in New Jersey.

“It was intense,” said Smith after the exciting three-way battle on the final round of the par-73 course. «Jonny and I played well all day. Matty in the group in front of us also played brilliantly. Yes, it was an unreal round. Something that I will definitely never forget. ” Smith received just under $ 1.5 million in prize money for his fourth success on the US tour. Only the winners of the 2021 PGA Tour were eligible to take part in the $ 8.2 million event.
