From tomorrow the 8th (Sunday) to the 9th (Monday), heavy rainfall is expected to occur mainly on the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan due to the effects of an active autumn rain front. Temperatures will plummet and it will become chilly. Please be careful of heavy rain and temperature changes.

8th to 9th: Humid air becomes stronger; rainfall increases in southern Kyushu, Kii Peninsula, Kanto coast, etc.

From tomorrow the 8th (Sunday) to the 9th (Monday), the autumn rain front will move northward to the southern coast of Honshu. There will be increased activity as moist air moves towards the front. The amount of rain is expected to increase mainly on the Pacific side of western and eastern Japan.

It will rain all day tomorrow in Kyushu, with localized heavy rain accompanied by thunder in the southern part of the country. Rain clouds will gradually accumulate in Shikoku, Kinki, and Tokai regions from around noon, and the amount of rainfall on the Kii Peninsula is likely to increase. In the Kanto region, there will be periods of sunshine during the day, but it will gradually start to rain at night.

The weather will gradually improve in Kyushu and Shikoku on the 9th, but it will rain widely in the Kinki and Kanto regions. Active rain clouds will continue to form over the Kii Peninsula, and there is a possibility of heavy rain in coastal areas of the Kanto region as well. In Kanagawa, Chiba, and Ibaraki prefectures, there is a “medium” chance of heavy rain warnings being issued.

Please be careful of landslides and rising river waters in southern Kyushu, the Kii Peninsula, and coastal areas of the Kanto region, where heavy rain is expected. Since this is a time when there is a lot of travel during the holidays, please check the traffic information for roads, trains, etc. frequently.

Temperatures are dropping in western and eastern Japan, so be careful about your physical condition

As cold air from the north side of the front enters western and eastern Japan, temperatures are likely to drop sharply from tomorrow the 8th (Sunday) to the 9th (Monday).

The expected maximum temperature for tomorrow is 19℃ in Fukuoka, 20℃ in Hiroshima, and 21℃ in Kochi, which will be as chilly as early to mid-November. Osaka, Nagoya, and central Tokyo will also be surrounded by cold air, with the temperature not rising for about 7 days today. The weather in Tohoku and Hokkaido will be the same as or as high as today on the 7th, and the daytime will be comfortable.

The predicted maximum temperature on the 9th is 17℃ in central Tokyo, which is similar to mid-November. It looks like it’s going to be especially chilly in the Kanto region. Temperatures will also drop in the rainy Tohoku region, and Sendai will not reach 20 degrees Celsius. On the other hand, western Japan, where the rain has stopped, will become hot and humid, with Hiroshima, Kochi, Fukuoka and other areas expected to be more than 5 degrees Celsius warmer than the previous day.

When going out during the holidays, be sure to check the rain and temperature forecast for your destination and be prepared for heavy rain or sudden changes in temperature.

What is heavy rain?

The Japan Meteorological Agency uses various expressions to give people a concrete idea of the strength and direction of rain.

Heavy rain refers to rain with an hourly rainfall of more than 30 mm and less than 50 mm. This is an image of rain falling like an overturned bucket. Also, you can get wet even with an umbrella, and about half of the people sleeping inside a wooden house will notice the rain. Outside, roads become like rivers, and cars driving on highways are at risk of “hydroplaning,” where a film of water forms between the tires and the road surface, making the brakes ineffective.

In areas where heavy rain is expected, extreme caution is required to avoid landslides and flooding of low-lying areas. Also, when you go out by car, please drive more carefully than usual.
