A mood of catastrophe should arise among all people who see the PIRLS
– Study on the reading skills of ten-year-olds – have read and understood. Everyone now has to recognize (after taking off their ideological blinders) that mastering everyday language (and ideally also the language of instruction) is the basis for educational success. Only seven percent of ten-year-olds in Austria read very well; 20 percent are now in the risk area (not being able to read).
The gap in reading skills, which by the way is de facto educational skills, is almost exactly two years of teaching for those students whose everyday language is not the language of instruction. For students whose parents read nothing or hardly anything themselves, the gap is around one school year.
So we finally need German lessons again that challenge good readers and support weaker readers. This is only possible through additional reading lessons, which could certainly be offered at school by people who enjoy reading and are literate. However, you have to spend money, otherwise this project will end up like the one with the grandly announced “daily gymnastics lesson”.
