Banning of TikTok and WeChat at Cégep Limoilou Sparks Controversy and Government Directive

Last Tuesday, students on both Cégep Limoilou campuses received a communication on their internal messaging box announcing the ban on using the TikTok and WeChat applications.

“As of November 14, 2023, a government directive, which identifies cybersecurity issues related to the use of TikTok and WeChat sites and applications, will apply to all students and all staff members », We can read in a copy of the message obtained by Le Soleil.

Thus, the two applications have been removed from all devices provided by the Cégep. In addition, they are inaccessible on personal devices that are connected to the establishment’s WI-FI network or wired internet.

“You will only be able to access these applications on personal devices using your data plan,” says management.

A government directive

On February 27, governments decided to ban the application from civil servants’ devices.

The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Cybersecurity and Digital Affairs had issued the directive to remove the TikTok application from mobile devices used by or made available to government personnel. However, the students were not concerned.

In March, several Quebec universities recommended that students and staff uninstall TikTok. However, the application was not automatically blocked as is now the case at Cégep Limoilou.

In its email, the management of Cégep Limoilou explains that “these directives apply to any public organization (such as CEGEPs) subject to the Act respecting the governance and management of information resources of public bodies and government enterprises (LGGRI) . »

However, Cégep Limoilou is the only higher education establishment in the Quebec region to apply the directive. At Laval University, just like at Cégep Sainte-Foy, students can still access TikTok when they are connected to the university’s WI-FI network, Le Soleil was able to confirm.

At the time of writing these lines, the management of Cégep Limoilou did not respond to questions from Le Soleil on the subject.
