Barbara Barrie Dies: Breaking Away Star and Tony Nominee Was 95

Barbara Barrie, the versatile actress known for her Oscar-nominated role in Breaking Away and her memorable television work on Barney Miller and Suddenly Susan, has died at the age of 95. Her daughter, Jane Harnick, confirmed she passed away on October 28, 2026, at her Manhattan home after a terminal cancer diagnosis, choosing a medically assisted death.

Born Barbara Ann Berman in Chicago on May 23, 1931, the acclaimed performer built a career spanning seven decades across stage, film, and television. She made her Broadway debut in the 1955 production of The Wooden Dish and went on to earn a Tony nomination for originating the role of Sarah in Stephen Sondheim’s landmark 1970 musical Company.

Her extensive stage credits included original stagings of The Prisoner of Second Avenue and California Suite, as well as Torch Song Trilogy. She also appeared on Broadway in The Selling of the President and in Joshua Harmon’s Significant Other in 2017. In 1974 at the Public Theater, her work in The Killdeer brought her Obie and Drama Desk Awards, while her portrayal in I Remember Mama netted her an Outer Critics Circle nomination. Her numerous other stage appearances spanned productions like The Vagina Monologues, The Crucible, The Beaux’ Stratagem, and Isn’t It Romantic?, alongside Shakespearean work at the Delacorte Theater and the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut.

From Cannes to Breaking Away: Defining Screen Roles

Barrie achieved international acclaim early on the big screen, winning the Best Actress award at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival for her starring role in the groundbreaking drama One Potato, Two Potato. Her film debut had come in 1956’s Giant. The 1964 film portrayed a controversial interracial relationship between a divorced woman and a Black man, a project she later recalled came together during a tense national backdrop. When reflecting on the project’s cultural weight, she once noted to The New York Times in 1964, It was an odd, eerie day when that phone call came to Flint. It was the very same day with police dogs and fire hoses in Alabama. I’m not a crusader, but it was a spooky coincidence.

Fifteen years later, she cemented her status as one of screen acting’s most cherished mothers by playing Evelyn Stoller in the 1979 coming-of-age comedy-drama Breaking Away. The role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and she later received an Emmy nomination when she reprised the character in the television series adaptation. She also received Emmy nominations for her guest roles on Law & Order and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Television Staples and Late-Career Honors

Barrie became a familiar face in homes nationwide through memorable parts in hit comedies and guest roles on programs such as Dr Kildare, The Fugitive, The Defenders, Route 66, Naked City, The Twilight Zone, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. From 1975 to 1978, she portrayed Elizabeth Miller, the grounded wife of Hal Linden’s title character on the ABC police precinct comedy Barney Miller.

Literary Advocacy and Family Legacy

Beyond acting, Barrie emerged as a prominent author and public advocate. Her published works included the nonfiction books Second Act and Don’t Die of Embarrassment, alongside young adult fiction titles Lone Star and Adam Zigzag.
