Stop everything! The first reactions of ‘Barbie’ have come out and it didn’t take long for them to compare Margot Robbie with other classics of the genre such as ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Clueless’.
The premiere of Barbie is getting closer to reaching Cinépolis and Cinemex theaters, in addition to the long-awaited visit of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling to Mexico City. The fever for the most famous doll in history begins to rise day by day and now, the first impressions of the film have emerged and boy will they give a lot to talk about, since it has been compared to Legally Blonde and Clueless.
If you grew up watching movies between the 90s and 2000s, you surely remember perfectly the productions starring Reese Witherspoon and Alicia Silverstone, you will surely remember their iconic characters: two wealthy girls, accustomed to the highest standards of society who find themselves involved in in funny situations that get out of hand.
And although clearly these stories have nothing to do -apparently- with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, it seems that this is not entirely true, since Eliana Dockterman, editor of Time magazine, was already able to see the film and found a lot of references to different films including the aforementioned ones.
“I’m not here to spoil the movie, which I saw in Gerwig’s temporary office, a gray space in Chelsea decorated with a magenta Barbie doormat. But I can say that it is a fun and self-aware movie, with hints of Clueless and Legally Blonde. It is also full of ideas and, at times, overloaded with them, ”he wrote for Time.
Other comparisons with Grease and Singing in the Rain
And just as we might expect from Barbie, we will also be looking at a film that brings together iconic moments that marked pop culture around the world, proof of this were the references that Dockterman also found for other great classics of the seventh art, one of them with the performances by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta; while from the classic of the 50s, it had Gene Kelly as its main protagonist.
“There’s also an amazing ballet musical number that seems inspired by Grease and Singing in the Rain; a car chase sequence; a mysterious woman in a kitchen; and a joke about Sylvester Stallone’s fondness for mink coats. And that’s before things get philosophical.”
Of course there was no information about the development of the story that could affect our experience watching this movie. Don’t forget that Barbie will hit theaters in Mexico next Thursday, July 20, when you’ll be able to see the amazing cast made up of stars like Helen Mirren, Kate McKinnon, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, and Will Ferrell.
