The European Union produced 343 million hectoliters of beer containing alcohol last year, approaching its pre-Covid crisis level when production stood at 347 million hectoliters (2019) , according to data from the European statistics office, released on Thursday. The volumes of non-alcoholic beers (less than 0.5% alc.) remained stable and do not represent 5% of the total.

Per capita consumption is estimated at 77 liters within the EU. In Belgium, however, this ratio has dropped considerably in recent years and is now close to 60 litres.

Germany remains the largest European beer producer, according to Eurostat, with 76 million hectoliters in 2022, more than a fifth of the Old Continent’s total production. It is joined on the podium by Spain and Poland with respectively 39 and 37 million hectos.

Belgians among the biggest exporters

Belgium is not included in the ranking but is certainly in the lead with these 23.3 million hectoliters produced last year, according to statistics released in June by the Federation of Belgian Brewers.

Our country is also known to be, with Germany and the Netherlands, one of the largest European exporters of beer with, in 2022, 16.4 million hectoliters which left Belgian soil for intra-regional destinations. and extra-European.

Outside the European Union, the preferred destinations for European malted beverages are the United Kingdom (8.6 million hectos) and the United States (7.2 million).

The alcoholic beers entering the European Union are British, by far, with 2.9 million hectoliters accounting for 57% of all extra-European imports. With just under a million hecto shipped to the Old Continent, Mexican beer comes in second place.
