Behavioral Science Research Controversies: Prof. Francesco Geno’s Falsified Findings and the Impact on Academic Community

Science is truth, science is truth; That is the document. Here is a glimpse of it. This chaff found in behavioral science research is a debate in the scientific world. What is Behaviorism? Why do we only do something when we do it? Why tie it all together and do it in one particular way when the possibilities are open to doing it in so many other ways? That is the field of study. It is a combination of biology, psychology, anthropology, sociology, culture, law and politics. At the forefront of behavioral research, Prof. at Harvard Business School in America. Position of Francesco Geno. An adorable Acharya who shines in the glow of fame. Annual income is more than one million dollars…! One of the top 40 professors under 40, selected globally…! One of the 50 most influential global thinkers…!

However, Prof. Dean of Harvard Business School. Shrikant Datar advised Geno to go on unpaid leave. He was also banned from entering the campus. For the first time in Harvard’s long history, Geno took the stage with the two words ‘matter under consideration’. However, they have sent legal notices demanding $2.5 million in damages and a jury trial.

Geno is accused of seriously falsifying the facts of behavioral observation. A research paper published 11 years ago raised the curtain on this tragedy. Gino ‘discovered’ that those who signed at the beginning of the affidavit were more truthful. Another finding was made that the signatories of the contract were less trustworthy. Following this, the American tax department and many commercial establishments implemented the method of signing on paper.

Two centuries ago, three researchers conducted their research to verify the authenticity of Geno’s signature theory. The researchers found that the observational results that supported the conclusion were fabricated. Three other research papers found artificial observational results. Many observations are made without the support of data. Let’s look at some of Geno’s other discoveries. Cheating and fraud are the signs of creativity…! If a coin is tossed, those who first predict whether it will be heads or tails and then change their words and lie are very gifted.

They believe that certain rituals help in self-control. They prescribe rituals to prevent overeating. For example, let’s say you are eating vada and sambar. Cut the vada into several pieces. Then place those pieces in a round shape on the plate. Stick a pickerand into a vadam and dip it three times in the sambar and eat it. In Geno’s original experiment, it was claimed that those who ritually followed the method ate 1424 fewer calories each day.

Another observation is that bad weather increases crime. They postulate this in an article published in Scientific American on January 16, 2018, titled ‘The dark nature of dark skies’. Evidence for this conclusion is the relationship between daily changes in wind direction in Chicago and Los Angeles and the number of crimes there.

When the new mobile phone came, did the old one fall out of hand or was it deliberately dropped? It is the ‘must have effect’ in Geno’s research. Gino interprets it as playful gestures of joyful urgency. It is concluded that when a new model comes, there is a widespread tendency to abuse the old one. The love for new things is also evident in human relationships…!

Another topic of Geno’s characteristic research is the absence of women in leadership positions. Only 5% of Fortune 500 companies are headed by women, 6% of venture capital firms are headed by women; Women make up less than 20 percent of science and technology professors in universities. Gino’s interpretation is that women do not find happiness in those positions. It has now been revealed that many of the ‘findings’ were not supported by authentic surveys, research, observations or data. But what about those who believed it and went to business school and taught it?
