Belgian fishermen brought back 15,921 tonnes of fish to the country’s ports last year, a drop of 6% compared to the previous year. The value of their nets was down 7.5%, to 90 million euros. Statistiek Vlaanderen noted a surprising element on Friday: cuttlefish has become the fish most brought into the country’s ports, ahead of plaice and sole.

More than 2,600 tonnes of cuttlefish were unloaded in Belgian ports, or 16% more than in 2022. The species alone generated a turnover of 10.6 million euros. Sole, 3rd in quantity (2,260 tonnes), is still the one that brings in the most. It represented almost half of the turnover last year, at 39.4 million euros.

The shrimp fishing, however, was not good. Only 251 tonnes were landed, a drop of 77% compared to 2022.

Fish and shellfish are mainly unloaded and sold in the ports of Zeebrugge and Ostend.
