Bergerac fans eliminate Saint-Etienne, Monaco out of Lens

Saint-Etienne, last in Ligue 1, was eliminated from the Coupe de France by amateurs from Bergerac (National 2), winners 1 to 0, Sunday January 30, in the round of 16 of the competition in Périgueux. Romain Escarpit scored the only goal of the match in the 76the minute.

Bergerac reaches the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France for the first time in its history and will be, in the next round, Tom Thumb with Versailles, another National 2 club, Toulouse winner on Saturday. « Honestly, it’s beautiful said the hero of the day. I come to reward the very good work of the team since the start of the match. We don’t give up, we fight. We are going to enjoy it all together because it does not happen all the time in a career. »

In the end, the victory of the Bergerac club, which had stopped at this stage of the competition five years ago against Lille, is far from being usurped and could even have been a little less narrow if its attackers had proof of more realism after the opener, the striker Escarpit missing a great opportunity after having dribbled past Paul Bernardoni (89e).

The Greens, dead last in Ligue 1 but cheered up by their success in the middle of the week in Angers, generally dominated the debates but in a too sterile way, on a bumpy ground, to worry the local goalkeeper Pierre Laborde-Turon, who did not still not conceded a goal in this edition after eight games. “We were keen to qualify, we defend well and there you go, a lack of concentration and we concede a goal, recognized the captain from Saint-Etienne, Timothée Kolodziejczak. But you have to be more biting in front of the goal sincerely, you have to have more desire, be more killer”. Adil Aouchiche had two interesting chances to open the scoring (10e, 48e), but lacked precision.

Monday quarterly draw

Bergerac joined in the next round Marseille, Nantes, Amiens (Ligue 2), Bastia (Ligue 2), Versailles (National 2) and Monaco.

In the poster of the evening between two clubs which follow each other in the classification in Ligue 1, Monaco (7e) has indeed taken over Lens (8e) by winning 4-2 at the Bollaert-Delelis stadium. Perfectly served on a cross from Caio Henrique, the Monegasque Wissam Ben Yedder beat Facundo Medina with a header to send the ball into the back of the net (18e). Led 0-3, the Lensois came back to score thanks to Wesley Saïd just before the break (45e). Launched after half-time by Franck Haise, Arnaud Kalimuendo revived his team a little more with a coiled shot from 20 meters (53e). The striker even almost equalized in the 84e minute, but his shot went just wide. Not realistic enough, Lens ended up being punished by a second goal from Ben Yedder (88e).
