Bethesda Game Studios has officially titled its long-awaited sequel to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. The announcement was made on November 3, 2026, during a video presentation celebrating the studio’s 40th anniversary, ending years of speculation following the project’s initial 2018 reveal.
Hammerfell as the New Frontier
The choice of Sentinel as a title points directly to the geography of the game. This province previously appeared in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard (1998) and The Elder Scrolls Online. While the teaser video featured a mysterious scroll emerging from sand, it provided no gameplay footage, character reveals, or details regarding the game’s mechanics.
The title has been a subject of intense fan theories for years. In August 2026, CEO of Xbox Asha Sharma provided a hint on social media by describing a live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI: ********, with eight asterisks that perfectly matched the letter count of “Sentinel.”
Thank you for 40 years of shared memories. We can’t wait to make even more together with The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Development continues, and while it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more, it feels great to finally reveal the name and location with you.
Bethesda Confirms Game Remains Years Away from Launch
Despite the official naming, Bethesda has confirmed that a release remains distant. In a statement released via social media, the studio noted that while development is ongoing, it will be some time before more details are ready to be shared. Bethesda confirmed that the game will utilize the Creation Engine 3, an upgraded version of the engine used for Starfield.
Journalist Jason Schreier reported that the project is still at least two years away from completion, placing a potential launch in 2028 or 2029. Schreier indicated that he has information regarding the studio’s internal target window.
While a release on PC and the Xbox ecosystem is considered, no official list of platforms has been published.
Todd Howard Calls Announcement Timing Appropriate
During the announcement, Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard stated that this was the “appropriate” time to reveal the name. The studio maintains that it is not yet ready to share further details, leaving the public to await future Xbox Showcase events for potential gameplay reveals.
