BHA Fines Sedgefield £6,500 After Injured Jockey Transported in Horsebox

Sedgefield Racecourse has been handed a £6,500 fine by a British Horseracing Authority (BHA) disciplinary panel after an injured jockey was transported to a hospital accident and emergency department in a horsebox rather than an ambulance.

Ambulances Leave Sedgefield Before Injured Jockey Is Hospitalized

The disciplinary hearing centered on an incident from March 19, when an unnamed rider suffered a left clavicle and shoulder injury following a fall on the County Durham course. According to details published by the judicial panel, the injured jockey was initially examined by an on-course doctor and cleared to ride again. However, the rider reported escalating pain, prompting the medical professional to advise a transfer to an A&E department.

By the time the decision for hospital admission was made, all ambulance crews had departed the venue. With no emergency vehicles available and the jockey experiencing severe pain that precluded travel in a standard passenger car, the rider was loaded into a horsebox. Medical staff followed behind in a separate vehicle. The BHA panel noted that the general instructions require proper hospital transfer accompanied directly by qualified medical staff rather than following in a separate car.

The breach of rule (B)36—requiring racecourses to comply with BHA general instructions—marked Sedgefield’s fourth such violation since 2022. Adjudicating panel member James O’Mahoney cited the multiplicity of breaches and the seriousness of the incident as aggravating factors in assessing the penalty. The venue’s infractions extended beyond transport failures to include an inoperative telephone line and worn, tired rooms that failed to project a clean clinical environment. The inspection also revealed a suture trolley used for storing medical equipment described as a heritage item of furniture.

Sedgefield Improves Medical Facilities After BHA Fine

Racecourse management acknowledged the errors and shortcomings identified in the BHA ruling. Following the March incident, an inspection took place on April 10, which revealed significant progress in addressing the medical facility deficiencies and operational protocols.
