Great Britain’s Foreign Minister David Cameron sees Israel as having a duty to enable more aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip. At a meeting with Israeli Minister Benny Gantz, he made it clear what steps Israel needed to take and how worried the United Kingdom was about a possible military offensive in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, Cameron said on the X platform (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday evening. “These are hard but necessary conversations.”
“I have again urged Israel to increase the flow of aid. We still don’t see any improvements on the ground. “That has to change,” Cameron said. An immediate humanitarian pause, more capacity for the distribution of aid and improved access by land and sea are needed. In addition, the aid supplies approved for the Gaza Strip would have to be expanded, such as accommodation and materials needed to repair infrastructure.
Britain supports Israel’s right to self-defense. “But as the occupying power in Gaza, Israel has a legal obligation to ensure that assistance is available to the civilian population,” warned Cameron. This responsibility has consequences, for example when Great Britain judges whether Israel is complying with humanitarian law.
Cameron had already criticized Israel in the British Parliament on Tuesday evening because of the increasingly catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. “Patience must decrease significantly and a whole series of warnings must be issued,” the conservative politician said. He had already warned weeks ago about the outbreak of disease and famine. This point has now been reached.
