Bill Maher Fires CAA After Being Snubbed from CEO’s Private Oscar Party

Bill Maher has terminated his partnership with CAA.

Sources reveal that the host of HBO’s Real Time fired CAA, his representation for over two decades, on Monday after not receiving an invitation to CEO Bryan Lourd’s exclusive Oscar party at his residence on Saturday night.

Maher, reportedly furious about being snubbed for the event, which coincided with the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s Night Before bash, made the decision to sever ties with CAA. According to industry newsletter Puck, the party at Lourd’s home was attended by notable figures such as J.J. Abrams, Barry Diller, Kamala Harris, Margot Robbie, Bob Iger, Alan Bergman, Dana Walden, Brian Robbins, Jason Blum, Brian Grazer, Donna Langley, Pam Abdy, and CAA clients Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston.

Lourd’s private event followed CAA’s celebration of Oscar nominees including Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Cillian Murphy, Jeffrey Wright, Annette Bening, Carey Mulligan, Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks, Jodie Foster, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph at Sunset Tower on Friday night. (Maher was seen attending WME’s Oscar party at Hearst Estate in Beverly Hills on Friday.)

Maher was represented at CAA by Steven Lafferty, who also serves as the agency’s head of television.

The news of Maher parting ways with CAA comes shortly after the agency negotiated a two-year extension for Real Time, securing the show’s continuation through its 24th season in 2026. As one of HBO’s longest-running originals, the talk show has been on air since 2003, second only to the recently concluded Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel in terms of the number of seasons aired.

Representatives for Maher have not yet provided a comment on the matter.
