This is not the first time that people have attacked Delhaize. On Monday, two franchise stores in Brussels had already been smeared with paint. In recent weeks and months, facades have also been painted over, locks stuck, windows smashed and van tires punctured.
In an email published on Thursday, the activists say they have attacked 11 stores this time around, including in Brussels, Ninove and Ghent. They say they want to call for a boycott of Delhaize, where a social conflict has been raging for weeks over a project to franchise 128 stores currently under their own management.
Delhaize confirmed the act of vandalism. “We regret it very much. These are criminal acts that do not bring us closer to a solution,” said spokesman for the lion sign, Roel Dekelver. “Investigations into the previous incidents are ongoing. We will file a new complaint.”
Despite the acts of vandalism, the stores will open their doors.
