The Sudanese army announced, on Wednesday, that its forces were subjected to a “treacherous attack” by the SPLM, despite the cease-fire agreement, which is renewed annually with the government.
In a daily briefing on field developments, the army said that its forces repelled the SPLM attack, in battles that resulted in a number of deaths and injuries on both sides.
Residents had indicated that the clashes took place near the army headquarters in the city of Dilling in South Kordofan state, where the SPLM is stationed, which is not clearly aligned with either side of the conflict in Sudan.
The movement is one of the most prominent armed factions in Sudan, and it had already signed a declaration of principles with the Sudanese transitional government in March 2020, which stipulated a comprehensive ceasefire with the army, under the auspices of South Sudan.
