Breakthrough Blood Test for Early Detection of Lung Cancer: Hope for Patients and Doctors

Researchers from Besançon University Hospital (Doubs) have developed a process that makes it possible to identify markers of lung cancer, the first fatal cancer in France, in the blood. Hope for patients and doctors. Explanations.

A breakthrough in health. Today, to detect lung cancer, the reference examination is low-dose CT. But the early detection of malignant tumors is still too weak, leading to many false positives that are very anxiety-provoking for the patient, claims Besançon University Hospital. This investigation is therefore proving to be costly for the healthcare system.

Besançon doctors Dr Zohair Selmani and Dr Alexis Overs, doctors at Besançon University Hospital, have developed a computer script. They analyzed the databases of 400 patients with lung cancer and identified markers common to each.

The tumor in contact with the vessels will release a lot of material into the blood circulation, and today, with technical progress, we will be able to detect some of these elements.

A simple blood test should make it possible to detect these markers. “The first use of this test will be patient monitoring. We want to see if the marker is present before treatment, and see how it changes during treatment. This marker is supposed to disappear if the treatment is effective.” specifies the doctor of France 3 Franche-Comté.

Monitoring these lung markers by blood tests will allow us to see the progress of the treatment or the disease. And adapt treatments. Avoid performing repeated scans.

This process was developed by the University Hospital of Besançon in collaboration with the University and the University Hospital of Burgundy. The time has now come for clinical validation with Hospices Civils de Lyon. This detection of lung cancer through a simple blood test could be a reality in 2025.

Lung cancer is responsible for a quarter of cancer deaths in France. 33,117 deaths from lung cancer were registered in 2018. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Smoking is the most important risk factor.

It is a common cancer with a poor prognosis. Researchers would like to be able to generalize the use of this blood screening, in order to detect the disease earlier.
The innovation can also be extended to other forms of cancer (colon, pancreas, prostate, ovaries).
