“Brussels Airport’s Plan for Largest Zero Carbon Facility to Combat CO2 Emissions by 2027”

It will be “largest zero carbon facility” from Belgium. Within four years, Brussels Airport plans to replace its huge gas boilers supplying the buildings of its terminal and the surrounding area.

The idea is that the heating of the departures hall, the arrivals hall, as well as the various piers and nearby buildings will no longer emit any CO2 emissions by 2027. “Replacing this facility with an innovative gas-free alternative will reduce the airport’s total CO2 emissions by around 70%”explains boss Arnaud Feist, who points out that Brussels Airport, as an operator, has already achieved carbon neutrality for its own emissions since 2018, in particular via offsets.

Brussels Airport ready to cut one in ten night flights: “In Frankfurt, if a plane arrives on the runway at 11:01 p.m., passengers are disembarked”

“We do not greenwash: our actions are concrete”

Zaventem wants to go further and thus intends to respect its commitments: to no longer emit CO2 within the framework of its own activities by 2050 at the latest. This investment is a first in Belgium: an installation of this scale (a total capacity of 21 megawatts) has never before been developed in our country.

But which technology will be selected to replace gas? “We do not know yet“, develops Mr. Feist. “CThis can be a heat pump or another system. The realization of this project is the subject of a call for tenders, during which each candidate can propose his own technique. The goal is to achieve no more CO2 emissions.

The aim is to start construction in 2025, so that the heating installation will be operational two years later. “We do not greenwash: our actions are concrete“, concludes the CEO.
