“Brussels Food Waste: Everything You Need to Know About the New Sorting Obligation and Bins”

The obligation to sort food waste comes into force next Monday. You will therefore have to arm yourself with your orange sorting bag. The region has also made bins available, distributed free of charge, which allow you to put this orange bag and which closes to avoid potential odors. For a good week, several collection points for these bins have been temporarily out of stock. Something to annoy local residents who made the trip on social networks and even worry some local elected officials.

Questioned a few days ago by the Last Hour, the spokesman of the Brussels Cleanliness Agency, Etienne Cornesse, provided some details embellished with figures. “Before December 2022, 130,000 bins had already been distributed. Since January 2023 we are already at 46,000 more. 50,000 new bins will go into stock in the next few days. With holidays and public holidays, deliveries were sometimes a bit delayed but we ordered enough bins. We must also distribute those that we receive between the different places where the inhabitants can pick them up. This explains why some municipalities have not yet received their entire order. So no, there is no shortage of bins.”

As a reminder, these bins are in no way compulsory. They simply allow food waste to be stored more or less hermetically before collection.
