Bulgaria disposes of large quantities of corona vaccine

“At this point in time there are no people willing to be vaccinated at all,” Acting Minister of Health Assen Medschdiev said in an interview on state television in Sofia on Saturday. According to Medschdiev, after Bulgaria had already destroyed “huge amounts” of expired corona vaccines, another 2.8 million doses are to be disposed of this year.

He has told the EU Commission that Bulgaria is in favor of ending a deal with BioNTech/Pfizer that obliges his country to buy vaccines by 2025, the minister said. This attitude is also supported by Poland, the Czech Republic and Lithuania. Bulgaria has the lowest corona vaccination rate in the EU.

According to official information, only 30 percent of the Bulgarian population have basic immunization against corona. Since mid-November 2022, there have been no mandatory protective measures against the corona virus in the south-eastern European holiday destination with 6.5 million inhabitants.
