BYD Leads Argentina’s EV Market With 12,000 Units Registered

BYD has solidified its position in the Argentine automotive market during its first year of direct operations, achieving leadership in the 100% electric vehicle segment with 12,000 units registered. The company, which operates without intermediaries, has established a local subsidiary to oversee its direct presence in the country. The firm’s performance was recently highlighted during the sixth edition of the Mobility Summit organized by LA NACION, where the brand’s local leadership addressed the evolving landscape of the national automotive sector.

BYD Establishes Direct Corporate Presence in Argentina

Christian Kimelman, general manager of BYD Argentina, characterized the brand’s entry as a very meditated decision following years of market study. By operating as a direct subsidiary rather than relying on importers, Argentina joined a group of 40 countries where BYD maintains a formal, integrated corporate presence. Reflecting on the past 12 months, Kimelman stated, It was an incredible year, with many learnings and achievements. The company distinguishes itself from traditional automakers by emphasizing its identity as a global technology firm, noting that over 90% of its vehicles are developed in-house, with all models utilizing the proprietary Blade Battery. Kimelman added that all vehicles are born with the Blade Battery, that great battery developed by the brand.

Professional Drivers Adopt Electric Vehicles as Infrastructure Grows

As the brand continues to expand, it is actively working to dismantle consumer myths regarding charging frequency and range anxiety. Kimelman noted that the company is seeing unexpected adoption among professional drivers, such as taxi and ride-hail operators, who are transitioning away from traditional combustion or gas-powered vehicles. Regarding the country’s charging infrastructure, the executive expressed optimism about the exponential growth of energy projects and semi-public charging initiatives. Because the manufacturer does not sell combustion vehicles, its entire portfolio relies on varying degrees of electrification, a strategy that Kimelman believes is well-suited to the current market reconfiguration.

Future Outlook and Technological Integration

  • The company is currently testing the introduction of a new charging system capable of reaching a high percentage of battery capacity in under nine minutes.
  • BYD maintains a long-term outlook for Argentina, focusing on building a network of strategic partners and prioritizing customer experience throughout the lifecycle of the vehicle.
  • The brand does not sell combustion vehicles, relying entirely on varying degrees of electrification to meet local demand.
