Muramasa: Revenant Blades hands-on gameplay preview

Vanillaware’s classic action-RPG Muramasa: The Demon Blade will return as Muramasa: Revenant Blades on February 4, 2027. The remaster brings the 2009 title to Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC for the first time, featuring 4K resolution, new English voice acting, and refined gameplay systems.

Vanillaware’s First PC Release

Originally released on the Nintendo Wii in 2009 and later ported to the PlayStation Vita in 2013, the title has long been considered a classic of the 2D side-scrolling genre. Published by Marvelous, the game is a near-definitive remaster reborn for modern platforms roughly 17 years after its initial launch.

The remaster aims to be a complete edition, combining the base game with the four stories from the previously released Genroku Legends DLC. Players can experience the journeys of six different protagonists, including the original two, Kisuke and Momohime. The game is set in a stylized version of Japan’s Genroku era, featuring a vast map of Honshu that sends players into caves, serene beaches, and otherworldly places. Exploration often mirrors the Metroidvania genre, where players can run past enemies entirely in later areas.

Combat Mechanics and Weapon Mastery

If a blade takes too much damage, it breaks, forcing players to swap to another while the damaged sword recovers. Combat is fluid, allowing players to dash, dodge, jump, and execute combo strings both on the ground and in mid-air.

Revenant Blades introduces a significant change to how these skills function. In the original versions, abilities were permanently tied to specific weapons, often forcing players to abandon a preferred skill if the sword’s attack power became obsolete. In Revenant Blades, repeatedly using a specific demon blade’s Secret Art allows you to permanently master that technique, allowing you to equip them even without making use of the requisite demon blade.

4K Resolution and New English Voice Acting Upgrade Visuals

The transition to modern platforms brings a 4K resolution upgrade that highlights Vanillaware’s signature art style. Early hands-on impressions have praised the visuals as stunning and strikingly beautiful, noting that the crispness makes it hard to believe the game is 17 years old. The audio experience has also been updated, with the inclusion of brand-new English voice acting that adds charm to interactions, alongside Japanese voice options and multiple written languages.

Quality-of-life improvements are integrated throughout the experience. Freshly added features include modes for viewing illustrations and character animations, as well as an option to rewatch cutscenes. The game remains a challenging experience; while early enemies like the Blue Monk offer little resistance, later encounters, such as straw-hat samurai, require precise blocking and evasion. Some players have compared the fast-paced, high-stakes combat to a 2D version of Ninja Gaiden, where the player must dart around the arena like an angry wasp.

Worldwide Release Arrives February 4 2027 on Multiple Platforms

The title is scheduled for a worldwide release on February 4, 2027. Physical editions will be available for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. As noted by reviewers who attended preview events at Marvelous’ headquarters in Tokyo, the game successfully retains the sensitive feel of its movement and combat while offering new ways for players to express their skill.
