CAF has signed an 811 million contract with the Boston subway, according to US media reports and the company has confirmed to the CNMV. The company will supply 102 subway cars to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). The contract also includes two driving simulators, park parts, special tools and test equipment for the vehicles that will circulate on the green line of the Boston metro.
This is the second contract that the Boston public transportation agency has signed with CAF, since in 2014 the Spanish company had already been responsible for manufacturing 24 LRVs that currently run on the oldest underground line in the United States. The current initiative seeks to replace units built between 1986 and 2007 of Japanese and Italian origin. CAF has highlighted that the new units seek to maximize passenger accessibility, as they are 100% low-floor and have priority areas for users with reduced mobility.
CAF’s operations in the United States are not limited to the city of Boston. Currently the company manufactures new trams for the expansion of the tram network in the city of Kansas, as well as metro cars for the city of Maryland. In addition to the plants in Spain (Beasain, Zaragoza, Irún and Castejón), CAF also produces its units in the United States, as well as in Mexico, Brazil, France and the United Kingdom.
CAF has also reported other international contracts during the second quarter of 2022, including the light rail in Tel Aviv (Israel) and the supply of rolling stock to Germany and the United Arab Emirates.
