Caisa lived in a darkened garage – the sun was a rare sight

– She has not been treated with respect.

This is what Nordjyllands Boarding and Pension in Hjallerup writes in a heartbreaking post on Facebook about the six-year-old German Shepherd bitch Caisa, who has recently moved into the boarding school run by Dyrenes Beskyttelse.

Nordjyllands Internat og Pension is used to seeing a bit of everything, but the story of Caisa is nevertheless one of the harsher ones.

In her six-year life, Caisa has lived most of the time in a closed garage with no windows or skylights. Only rarely has she been aired.

Cathrine Cocks, communications officer at the boarding school in Hjallerup, says that Caisa has been staying at the boarding school since the beginning of March.

– We received an inquiry from a concerned citizen who had heard for a long time that the dog had been barking in the garage and never came out.

The inquiry meant that staff from the boarding school – together with officers from the North Jutland Police – sought out the owner of Caisa.

– Some persuasion was needed, because unfortunately we have a really bad animal law here at home, so it takes a lot before you can take people’s animals, says Cathrine Cocks.

With her past, it is no wonder that Caisa was both malnourished and poor in muscle when she arrived at the boarding school in Hjallerup. Miraculously, a check-up and x-ray at the vet revealed no serious defects – apart from bad teeth, several of which are being removed this week.

– Caisa is, despite her previous sad existence, a truly amazing kind and loving soul. She deserves a fantastic dog life, writes Nordjyllands Boarding and Pension in the Facebook post that has gone viral.

The post was only made after the picture of Caisa had been on the boarding school’s website for a few weeks with the desire to find her a new home.

– But we received no inquiries, says Cathrine Cocks.

The post on Facebook changed that.

Over 4000 have responded to the post, more than 550 have commented on the story, which has also been shared more than 4400 times.

And best of all; around 100 have volunteered as new owners of Caisa.

So many animals are accepted by the boarding schools

  • Dyrenes Beskyttelse operates nine animal shelters in Denmark – four in its own shelters and five through cooperation agreements with external shelters.
  • In 2023, the nine shelters found new homes for 8,498 animals.
  • The many animals are distributed as follows:
  • Cats: 6603
  • Dogs: 602
  • Rabbits: 467
  • Birds: 369
  • Rodents: 342
  • Other animals: 115

– Now we conduct telephone interviews with those people. Then we assess which home suits Caisa best, and then they come out and meet the dog. It is a long process, because it is important that she gets to the right place. She is a working dog that needs to be trained, and that requires you to be at her home, because she can’t do anything. She’s just cute, so it takes her dog owner to take it in, says Cathrine Cocks.

She states that Caisa did not go alone in the darkened garage. There were quite a few other small animals in cages – rabbits among others.

– We have also brought them along, says Cathrine Cocks.

The case of Caisa and her miserable life in the garage has been reported to the police. This is confirmed by Police Commissioner Henrik Jensen from the animal welfare unit at North Jutland Police.
