A prototype satellite from the Caltech research center, launched in January, has for the first time beamed energy from space to Earth. This technology could be widely used in the future.

Why is this important?

Many countries want to move away from fossil fuels over the next few decades. But it is not yet clear where they will get their energy from. Therefore, in addition to existing renewable sources, experiments are being carried out on more exotic ways of generating electricity.

In the news : The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) demonstrated with the Microwave Array for Power-transfer Low-orbit Experiment (MAPLE) that it is possible to send solar energy produced in space to the surface of the Earth.

  • The technology was first tested in space. MAPLE was equipped with two receivers, located about thirty centimeters from the transmitter. Wirelessly transmitted electricity was broadcast over this short distan
