Canadian Citizen Arrested for Espionage at NATO Headquarters in Belgium

A Canadian citizen of Chinese origin has been arrested in Belgium on suspicion of carrying out espionage on behalf of a third country while completing an internship at NATO.

The Arrest at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe

The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly released, worked as an intern at the United States-led defense alliance’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) located in Mons, Belgium. According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, Belgian authorities executed the arrest on Thursday following internal alerts raised by military intelligence.

Investigators state that the individual is suspected of spying on behalf of a third country and participating in a criminal organization. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office noted that the suspect first drew scrutiny from SHAPE’s internal security services, who promptly escalated the matter to Belgium’s General Intelligence and Security Service (ADVR/SGRS).

Judicial Proceedings and Investigation Scope

Following the intelligence handover, the federal judicial police in Charleroi took charge of the operational investigation. On Thursday, authorities conducted coordinated searches at both the suspect’s private residence and her workplace within the secure military installation.

A specialized investigating magistrate formally served the suspect with an arrest warrant on Friday.
