Experts in Morocco warn of the steady increase in the number of cancers that now exceeds 50,000 cases per year, while it was around 40,000 cases in 2020.
According to the latest epidemiological data on cancer in Morocco, unveiled on January 21 on the occasion of the first National Cancer Registry Day, the global incidence of cancer is 116 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The risk of developing a cancerous pathology before the age of 75 is 12%.
Frequency of cancers by sex
The most common cancer in men is that of the lung with 25.6% of diagnosed cases. the prostate cancer comes in second place, with a representativeness of 13.9%. It is followed by the cancer colorectal (8,9%), the bladder cancer (5.4%) and the non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) (4.5%).
In women, breast cancer remains the most frequent and represents 38.1% of the pathologies observed.
The second most regularly diagnosed cancer in women is that of the thyroid (11.3%), followed by Cervical cancer (8.1%), of cancer colorectal (6.9%) a you ovarian cancer (4%).
These figures were presented by representatives of the Ministry of Health, the Lalla Salma Foundation and the Moroccan Association of Cancer Registries, on the sidelines of the first National Cancer Registry Day, held on January 21 on the theme ” Cancer surveillance in Morocco: past, present and future”.
This day made it possible to raise the awareness of decision-makers as well as the scientific community on the importance of cancer surveillance in the fight against this evil of the century.
