A couple was surprised by an avalanche on the heights of La Fouly (VS). The woman managed to get out as it was only partially covered in snow.
A couple was swept away on Sunday around noon by an avalanche on the heights of La Fouly, in Valais. The woman, partially covered, managed to extract herself from the snow. The man was less lucky, he died in the evening at the Sion hospital.
Leaving on ski touring from a place called “Le Clou”, the couple wanted to reach the “Chantonnet” located on the Italian border, the cantonal police said in a press release on Monday. When they had reached the foot of the northeast face of this summit, an avalanche was triggered above.
Hikers who were in the area were able to quickly arrive at the scene of the flow, search and then discover the man. A resuscitation was undertaken until the arrival of an Air-Glaciers crew a few minutes later, specify the police.
First deadly avalanche
The 54-year-old Bernese resident in the canton of Vaud was then quickly airlifted to Sion hospital where he died the same evening. The Public Ministry opened an investigation.
This is the first deadly avalanche of the 2022-2023 season, a spokesperson for the cantonal police told Keystone-ATS. Last season, three avalanches claimed the lives of three people, he said. In 2020-2021, there were eleven deadly avalanches for eleven deaths.
