The French supermarket brand Carrefour, which is very present in Belgium, will inform its customers from Monday of cases of “shrinkflation” concerning food products. This anglicism, a contraction of the words “inflation” and “to shrink”, consists of masking the rise in prices by reducing the quantities sold.

From Monday, Carrefour stores will display products on which there is “shrinkflation” with the indication “This product has seen its container reduced and its price increased”.

The mention will concern coffee as well as chips, mayonnaise or drinks. The extent of the price increase will also be indicated.

Carrefour’s approach responds to a request from the French government, which wants more transparency in this area.
