Carros strawberries are early and almost ripe

The strawberry growers in Carros are happy. The fruits are almost ripe and will be, for sure, for the Easter weekend and then of course for the Carros Strawberry Festival, April 22 and 23.

On the other hand, prices remain high because inputs, seedlings, trays and other materials have increased on average by more than 10%. “We have to sell our kilos of strawberries at least 10 euros, production release, if we want to be profitableexplains Jean-Pierre Clérissi, producer of Gattières. We cannot go below because the charges and labor are incompressible. Labor for example represents 90% of the price of the strawberry.

More competitive in 2023

Each year, the people of the Côte d’Azur produce 200 tonnes of Carros strawberries. This is very little compared to the rest of Europe and Spain, which is around 400,000 tonnes per year. But this year, local producers have a little more chance of being competitive. “The increase in fuel has consequences on the price of transport. Bringing strawberries from Morocco or Spain has a price. We are closer, our fruits are picked more ripe and we therefore have a shot to play this year.”admits Jean-Pierre Clérissi.
