CATL launches Shenxing ultra-fast battery pack, ushering in the era of EV fast charging

Ningde, China (ots/PRNewswire) On August 16, CATL launched Shenxing, the world’s first ultra-fast chargeable 4C LFP battery, which enables a range of 400 km on a 10-minute charge and over 700 km on a single full charge. Shenxing is expected to allay the fear of fast charging for EV users and usher in an era of super-fast EV charging.

With the advancement of battery technology and the significant improvement in the overall performance of EV batteries, the industry has now achieved a long reach for EVs. At present, the problem of fast charging is the most important factor preventing consumers from switching to electric vehicles. Focusing on the essence of electrochemistry, CATL continues to innovate in materials, electrochemistry and system structure to creatively achieve super-fast charging, high energy density and high levels of safety. Shenxing pushes the performance limits of LFP chemistry and leads innovation in the battery industry.

Redefining the LFP battery to take away the fear of charging

Accelerating the extraction of lithium ions. Shenxing uses superelectronic network cathode technology and fully nano-crystallized LFP cathode material to create a superelectronic network that facilitates lithium ion extraction and fast response to charging signals.

Improving the storage rate of lithium ions. Graphite innovation uses CATL’s latest second-generation Fast Ion Ring technology to change the properties of the graphite surface. This enlarges the emplacement channels and shortens the emplacement distance for lithium ions, which in turn results in extremely fast current conduction. In addition, a multi-stage electrode design has been developed to achieve a perfect balance between fast charging and long range.

Declining resistance of the lithium-ion movement. CATL has developed a brand new superconducting electrolyte formula that effectively reduces the viscosity of the electrolyte, resulting in improved conductivity. In addition, CATL has improved the extra-thin SEI film to reduce the resistance of the lithium-ion movement.

Improving the transmission rate of lithium-ion: Regarding the separator, CATL lowered the transmission resistance of high porosity lithium ions and shortened the average transmission distance.

Improving overall performance in charging speed, range and security

In addition to the particularly fast 4 C charging process, Shenxing also achieves a long range, fast charging in a wide temperature range and a high level of safety through structural innovations and the use of intelligent algorithms.

Providing a range of more than 700 km. CATL has developed a breakthrough all-in-one bundling technology, building on the integration of the internal traverse and end plates of CTP 3.0 technology, achieving high bundling integration and efficiency. This enables Shenxing to achieve a range of more than 700 km, breaking the performance limits of LFP chemistry.

Normal charging at low temperatures. At room temperature, the Shenxing can be charged to 80% SOC in 10 minutes. Meanwhile, CATL leverages cell temperature control technology on the system platforms to ensure cells heat up quickly to the optimal operating temperature range. This enables a 0-80% charge in just 30 minutes at temperatures down to -10°C and uncompromising acceleration performance from 0-100 km/h at low temperatures.

Safety first. The upgraded electrolyte and separator with high-grade safe coating ensure Shenxing battery double protection. By regulating the global temperature field inside the cells using intelligent algorithms, CATL has developed a real-time error checking system, which can solve the problems caused by the rapid refueling and enable a high level of security of the Shenxing battery.

Achieve mass production by the end of 2023 and usher in the era of ultra-fast charging

Thanks to its strengths in extreme manufacturing, CATL is able to quickly transfer the technology from the lab to the market, enabling rapid mass production of the Shenxing battery. According to Gao Huan, CTO of CATL’s Chinese electric car division, mass production of the Shenxing should be achieved by the end of this year, and Shenxing-equipped electric cars should hit the market in the first quarter of next year.
