The astronomers from the Universities of Mauritius and Manchester think cell towers might pave the way for possible communication with extraterrestrial life. As the astronomers describe in their study published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, aliens may be able to gather information regarding us through our cellphone towers. Next to military radar transmissions, they are the largest source of the earthly radio leak.

Aliens use radio leaks

“I think it’s entirely possible that advanced civilizations are out there, and some might be able to observe Earth’s human-caused radio leaks,” says Dr. Nalini Heeralall-Issur, co-author of the study. If extraterrestrial civilizations are within eight light-years away and have a telescope that is technically comparable to the Green Bank Telescope in western Virginia, they might use our radio leak to locate us.
