The opening of the Haapsalu horror and fantasy film festival will go down in history this year, when the craziest film of this year – and possibly of the entire film history here – will be shown for the first time.

“If a combination of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, Monty Python, South Park, Edgar Wright and… ‘Les Misérables’ sounds good to your ears, then ‘The Chainsaw Sings’ will blow you away,” HÕFF catalog introduces the brand new film, tickets on sale from today .

It is an almost two-hour long musical horror comedy, which its author Sander Maran himself calls a shameless action-horror-musical-comedy.

A bloody chainsaw killer full of krutches turns the life of a newlywed couple upside down, and so begins a crazy maze of adventures.

With Kamaluga, over-the-top fun and pulp operatic violence, sultry romance and haunting songs – there is something strange for every taste in this film that walks on the border between good-good and so-bad-that-good.

The lovers are played by Karl-Joosep Ilves and Laura Niils, the former CEO of HÕFF Martin Ruus appears as the chainsaw murderer, and his mother is played by Rita Rätsepp. In other parts, Janno Puusepp, Ra Ragnar and Henryk Johan Novod, Rasmus Merivoo, Maria Reinup and many other more or less well-known people. Koit Toome has also contributed with the singing voice.

The film has an unusually long production history – it took a total of ten years from the beginning of the shooting to reaching the screen with a minimal budget.

“This is my passion project,” as the 33-year-old author himself says, for whom this is his feature film debut. His best-known short film “Curiosity Kills”, or “Curiosity Kills”, which was produced as a student project at the Baltic Film and Media School, participated in hundreds of international festivals between 2012 and 2015 and won a number of awards.

One of the motivations for making “Chainsaws sang” is the Haapsalu horror and fantasy film festival, where Maran is a regular visitor as a dedicated fan of genre films, and where it was supposed to be released in 2014.

This year’s opening ceremony of HÕFF, which includes the opening film and tickets for which can be purchased starting today, will take place on Friday, April 26 at 7 p.m. in the Haapsalu Cultural Center.

It features, among other things, songs from the musical “Kuidas kunjas sluinks kippus” directed by Kai Tarmula, performed by the students of Läänemaa joint high school accompanied by the alumni band led by Antti Kammiste.

The performance is dedicated to the author of the songs, Peeter Volkonski, the composer of the legendary TV play “How the King Leaned to the Moon”, who will receive the HÕFF appreciation award.

The Haapsalu horror and fantasy film festival will take place on 26-28 until April in the Haapsalu cultural center.

The full schedule will be announced on April 8.
