Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay began its path to the 2026 World Cup in an auspicious way this Friday, defeating Chile 3-1 (2-0 partial) at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo for the first date of the South American qualifiers.
The Celeste’s victory came with a double from Nicolás de la Cruz (at 38 and 71) and Federico Valverde, at 45+2, while Arturo Vidal scored for the visit at 74.
“It was important for us to start this era by winning,” De la Cruz highlighted at the end of the match.

The locals led by the Argentine, who was making his debut in official matches at the head of the Uruguayan team, had a hard time getting into the rhythm. A neat Chile with close lines surpassed him in the first minutes, snatching the ball and taking the initiative.
