Chinese Researchers Discover ‘Ripple’ Structures in Milky Way

For the first time, scientists in China have mapped pervasive corrugated patterns throughout the Milky Way, delivering brand-new observational data to help decipher the galaxy’s dynamic growth and three-dimensional layout. Published on August 7, 2026, in the journal Nature Astronomy, the finding comes from a team at the Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Mapping the Warp of the Galaxy

Shaped much like a distorted vinyl record—with one edge curving upward and the opposite dropping downward—our galaxy experiences a macro-level bending phenomenon referred to as the “warp.” Yet, thorough observations and numerical analyses examining smaller-scale vertical formations within our galaxy have historically been absent. To bridge this observational gap, the research team analyzed more than 30,000 molecular clouds in three dimensions.

This mapping utilized carbon monoxide spectral-line survey data harvested from the PMO’s 13.7-meter millimeter-wave telescope. Because carbon monoxide serves as a key tracer of cold molecular gas—the raw material for star formation—it provides a window into the mechanics of the outer disk. Spanning roughly 26 kiloparsecs away from the center of the Galaxy, the spatial dataset encompasses nearly half of the outer disk belonging to the Milky Way.

Isolating Gravitational Perturbations

With these spatial samples secured, the team constructed the first global warp model of the molecular gas outer disk. By subtracting the large-scale warp background, the researchers detected clear, wave-like vertical undulations, or corrugations, in the residual structure. These corrugations appear as large-scale vertical deviations of the disk.

According to Sun Yan, an associate researcher at the PMO and the paper’s first and co-corresponding author, these formations point to outside forces.

“These corrugations appear as large-scale vertical deviations of the disk, likely originating from bending waves excited by external gravitational perturbations,” Sun explained. Scientists on the project additionally suggest that these formations could represent “ripples” traveling across the outer disk, generated by gravitational disruptions from passing satellite galaxies like dwarf galaxies moving near the Milky Way.
