NASA has consolidated its internships, student competitions, and career programs into a new back-to-school guide designed to connect students and educators with agency missions, scientific data, and its technical workforce, according to Edtechinnovationhub. Published by the NASA STEM Team, the resource directs prospective participants to separate websites for vacancies, eligibility requirements, and deadlines.
NASA Releases Back-to-School Guide for STEM Internships and Technical Careers
The initiative spans mentored agency projects, citizen science opportunities that can be performed remotely, and student challenges where teams design and prototype responses to technical problems. Rob LaSalvia, Partnership Manager in NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, highlighted programs Expanded student challenges like the Human Exploration Rover Challenge, drawing teams from around the world,
in a LinkedIn post. Participating schools and community groups can also apply to interact directly with astronauts and agency experts.
Career Events and Student Research Programs
To build a continuous pipeline of skilled technical workers, NASA is directing high school, community college, and career technical education students toward virtual and in-person aerospace career events. Career Technical Education Days provide students with access to technical workers who discuss their training, roles, and certifications. Additionally, Next Gen STEM Virtual Career Connections offer live online sessions with specialists supporting agency missions.
Community college students are also participating in structured research programs. Seven students from Brookdale Community College were selected for the twelfth cohort of the NASA-sponsored internship program through the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium, as reported by Brookdalecc. The program pairs full-time students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher with faculty mentors from Brookdale, Nokia Bell Labs, Rutgers University, and the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

Upcoming Space Missions and Classroom Connections
The new school year features education activities tied to several upcoming flight schedules. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch no earlier than 7:20 a.m. EDT on August 30, offering a field of view at least 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope alongside virtual guest registration. Furthermore, NASA’s SpaceX Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station is scheduled for September.

Looking toward lunar exploration, Artemis III is planned to launch into Earth orbit in 2027 to test rendezvous and docking with commercial human landing systems intended for Artemis IV and subsequent missions. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for Artemis II, which will send four astronauts on a roughly 10-day journey around the Moon and back, as detailed by UNL. Allison Porter Carpenter, a University of Nebraska–Lincoln alumna working on the Lunar Architecture Team, helps verify that the Orion spacecraft meets human-system requirements for this first crewed lunar flight in more than 50 years.
Classrooms can also apply for In-Flight STEM Downlinks to have astronauts on the International Space Station answer prerecorded student questions during live sessions.
