Chris Brown Receives Suspended Sentence for London Nightclub Bottle Attack

Grammy-winning R&B singer Chris Brown avoided an immediate prison sentence on Monday, October 26, 2026, after receiving an eight-month prison term suspended for 12 months at Southwark Crown Court for attacking a former friend with a tequila bottle inside a central London nightclub.

Chris Brown Receives Suspended Sentence for Affray

  • Chris Brown was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, after pleading guilty to affray.
  • The conviction stems from a February 2023 altercation at the Tape private members’ club in Mayfair, where Brown struck Abraham Diaw in the head with a heavy glass bottle.
  • Judge Tony Baumgartner noted that while the attack was plainly dangerous, a custodial sentence was not warranted due to the guilty plea and mitigating circumstances.

Sentencing at Southwark Crown Court

The legal proceedings concluded on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court, where Judge Tony Baumgartner handed down the suspended sentence. Brown, 37, sat looking at the floor in the dock for much of the hearing in front of a packed public gallery. Alongside Brown, his vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, 40, received a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, for his role in the altercation. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in costs.

Judge Baumgartner called the attack “plainly dangerous” and warned that “commercial success does not attract preferential treatment” in court. The judge added that the repeated use of a glass bottle aimed at the head carried the risk of delivering a far more serious injury than what was ultimately sustained. Heidi Stonecliffe KC, prosecuting, detailed that Brown used a heavy square-shaped tequila bottle to strike the victim twice over the left-hand side of the head before raining down further blows.

CCTV Shows Bottle Attack at Tape Club

The incident occurred at approximately 3 a.m. on February 19, 2023, on the dance floor of Tape, a private club in the Mayfair neighborhood of London. CCTV footage played in court showed Brown striking Abraham Diaw four times with the bottle—connecting twice with the head and once with the shoulder—before Akinlolu grabbed Diaw in a bear hug and Brown threw punches. The brawl lasted about 20 seconds before bystanders pulled Brown away.

Brown left the United Kingdom following the altercation but was arrested in May 2025 at a Manchester hotel after flying into the city for a concert. He had been free on bail of 5 million pounds—approximately $6.7 million—which allowed him to tour Europe and North America. In July, Brown pleaded guilty to a count of affray, a charge defined under U.K. law as the use or threat of unlawful violence that leads someone to fear for their personal safety, which carried a maximum potential penalty of three years in prison.

Guilty Plea Prevents Immediate Prison Sentence

Despite the severity of the offense, Judge Baumgartner stated that Brown did not qualify for an immediate custodial sentence because he entered a guilty plea and presented several mitigating circumstances. The judge acknowledged Brown’s previous convictions while noting that he had maintained a clean record in recent years. Claire Campbell, a senior crown prosecutor in London, emphasized following the July guilty plea that nobody is above the law and that the Crown Prosecution Service pursues violent incidents aggressively.

Brown rose to stardom as a teenager in 2005 and secured his first Grammy Award for best R&B album in 2011 for F.A.M.E., followed by a second in the same category for 11:11 (Deluxe) in 2025. His career has faced repeated legal challenges since his 2009 felony conviction for assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna hours before they were scheduled to perform at the Grammy Awards. Over the subsequent years, he has faced multiple arrests across several U.S. states and was questioned in Paris in 2019 on suspicion of rape before being released without charge.
