“The ND is the main blood donor of a faction that worked for the unity, development and presence of Greece in the EU,” said Mr. Christodoulidis, pointing out that the ND proceeded with major social structural and state reforms. He described the ND as a “European beacon” that “has always been on the right side of history”, as he said, while emphasizing that “the ND under Kyriakos Mitsotakis contributed with deeds and not words to securing the sovereignty and independence of Greece by upgrading the Armed Forces gaining the respect of all countries”.
“With Kyriakos at the helm of the country we will achieve all our goals,” said Mr. Christodoulidis.
The Cypriot President pointed out that Greece sympathizes and supports the struggle of Cyprus for the overthrow of the deeds of the illegal Turkish occupation, which completes 50 years this year.
“This cannot be the future of European Cyprus,” said Mr. Christodoulidis, adding that he will spare no effort to end the occupation and reunify his homeland. “I feel the need to thank the Greek people and Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the active and substantial support of our efforts based on a common understanding and a unified strategy,” said Mr. Christodoulidis, underlining that Cyprus’ ties with Greece.
He also said that in a few days it will be twenty years since Cyprus joined the EU, “which would not have been possible without the support of the Greek government and people, to whom we will always be grateful”.
Mr. Christodoulidis concluded by saying that as a member of the European family with a floor in Brussels, Greece and Cyprus constitute the external borders of the EU and are key pillars of security and stability in the region.
“We will continue our joint strategy on many issues of concern to the international community. From Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine to developments in the Middle East, Greece and Cyprus can play an important role in the region,” said Mr. Christodoulidis and closed his speech by expressing his support for the candidacy of Ursula von der Laien for the presidency of the Commission.
