Cindy Banda Shifts Vote to Democrats Due to Medical Debt

Cindy Banda, a 46-year-old single mother from McAllen, Texas, who voted for Donald Trump in each of his three campaigns, shifted her political support to the Democratic Party ahead of the November 3 midterm elections after accumulating over $25,000 in medical debt from surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation despite having health insurance through her job selling internet service.

Banda’s financial strain involves roughly $7,000 a month required for her mortgage, utilities, groceries, and car payments—including a $1,300 vehicle payment text from TD Auto Finance. Having been on sick leave for a year following her breast cancer diagnosis and right breast removal surgery at a Houston cancer center, she returned to making door-to-door rounds selling Spectrum Wi-Fi in McAllen without commission or sales since her biopsy. She also faces a $7,500 deductible that resets every January.

Shifting Political Priorities Amid Cancer and Debt

While Banda previously backed Trump due to her opposition to abortion, the struggle to make ends meet while confronting death and debt rearranged her priorities. National polling reflects broader frustrations: a September Fox News poll showed that about half of registered voters view healthcare costs as a major problem, up from just over one-third four years ago. An AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll from the same month indicated that voters are nearly twice as likely to trust Democrats over Republicans to handle healthcare.

A Visit From a Democratic Candidate

Banda’s shift toward the Democratic Party was further influenced when James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminary student running for U.S. Senate as a Democrat, attended one of her fundraisers. Talarico spoke about his diabetes and his work in the Texas Statehouse to lower insulin prices, prompting Banda to wonder what he could achieve for cancer patients.
